ABOUT YMCA
The YMCA is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. It is a worldwide organization with more than 58 million beneficiaries from 125 national associations. Type: International NGO Industry: Non-Governmental Organization Founded: June 6, 1844, London, United Kingdom Headquarters: 101 N Upper Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60606, United States
Our History – A Brief History of the YMCA Movement. The Young Men’s Christian Association was founded in London, England, on June 6, 1844, in response to unhealthy social conditions arising in the big cities at the end of the Industrial Revolution (roughly 1750 to 1850).
In the 40 years since the Village People released “YMCA,” the song has become a cultural touchstone: a gay anthem famous for its innuendos and double entendres about young, fit men “having a good time,” as well as a staple at Yankees games and bar mitzvahs.
Nationwide Membership enables active full facility YMCA members to visit any participating YMCA in the United States. Community participants and special memberships are not eligible to participate. You will need to sign a waiver each time you visit a Y outside of your association.
We believe that everyone — no matter who they are or where they’re from — deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. Everything the Y does is in service of ensuring people and communities thrive.
